God's Humility in Hebrews

Humility is often characterized by a lack of arrogance, sincere gratitude, and a humble view of oneself. But when we look at the biblical definition of humility, it goes beyond that. Humility is a critical and constant emphasis on godliness in the Bible when we are called to follow Christ humbly and trust in God's wisdom and salvation. We must humble ourselves before our Creator because of the gift of life given to us. On the other hand, Merriam-Webster simply defines humility as "freedom from pride or arrogance: the quality or state of being humble."

In chapter 1, the author of the book of Hebrews brilliantly demonstrates the divinity of Jesus and his superiority over all angels, based on the Scriptures. Now in chapter 2, he shows Jesus' humanity in the Bible and applies the meaning of Jesus' humanity. Hebrews 2:7 says, "You made them a litte lower than the angels." During the time period of Hebrews, Jews considered that human beings were inferior to angels because they wondered how Jesus Christ could be superior to angels when in fact he was a man. Adam was originally made higher than the angels, but by sin he, he was lowered, and subjected to death; for the angelic nature is not mortal.

Thus, when taking the words in their common acceptation, son of man in his present state may be said to be lowered below the angels. The whole of the passage suits Jesus better than it does any of the children of men, or than even Adam himself in a state of innocence; for it is only under the feet of Jesus that all things are put in subjection, and it was in consequence of his humiliation that he had a name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth, Philippians 2:9-11

Humility's importance is directly related to the deadly consequences of pride. Pride separates us from God as we do not respond and appreciate the eternal sovereignty of our Lord. Therefore, the importance of humility is noticed in the deep gratitude we hold in proper recognition of God's divinity and love for us. Humility's importance is also found in viewing our flawed nature as humans on earth and our susceptibility to sin if not vigilant against temptation.
